Feeding
Proper feeding is one of the most important factors in keeping your animals happy & healthy. Please keep in mind that different animals have different needs.
In nature fish eat continuously. It is better to feed your animals small amounts several times a day rather than over-feeding them once.
All food should be consumed within 30 seconds. You should not see food floating or at the bottom of your aquarium. If you find food remnants after a couple of minutes, you’ve fed your animals too much.
Uneaten food will eventually decompose and lead to an unhealthy environment making your animals more susceptible to disease.
Excessive food will decay and turn into ‘algae food’, causing unwanted algae to flourish.
Below are a few basic guidelines:
A varied diet is as important to fish as it is to humans. Feeding them a varied diet can help prevent illnesses and lengthen their life span.
Take a small container and add a variety of frozen cubes. Let them thaw for about 5 minutes then feed. Give the cubes a little pinch before releasing them in order to break them up and allow all your animals to eat. If this is not done, the more aggressive fish will consume the entire cubes whole leaving the less aggressive fish at a disadvantage.
Conclusion
1. Always remember to feed the animals not the aquarium
2. If fish are not eating do not add more food!
3. Only feed animals what they will consume within 30 seconds
4. It is best to feed several (1-2) times a day
5. Variety is the spice of life: Feed your animals a variety of foods
6. Do not Microwave, boil or dilute frozen food
7. Do not feed marine animals non marine foods i.e., live worms, beef heart etc.
8. Do not let food thaw more than 5 minutes
9. Break-up frozen food before feeding. Do not feed whole frozen cubes
If you have a reef aquarium, remember to feed your invertebrates, such as anemones and corals sparingly and according to technician’s instructions!
